  7. This README is one of five online files included with
  8. Paradox. You'll find additional information in these files:

  42. 1. INSTALLATION INFORMATION

  45. - If you install Paradox on a machine that has a VGA
  46.   driver, but is using a monochrome display, the check
  47.   boxes on the Installation dialog box do not paint
  48.   correctly. You can assume that all check boxes are
  49.   checked by default.
  50.  
  51. - If you install Paradox for Windows 4.5 as a part of the
  52.   Borland Office suite, you can disregard the CAUTION
  53.   statements on pages 2 and 33 of the Borland Office
  54.   Getting Started booklet.
  55.  
  56. - If, during the installation process, the Install program
  57.   attempts to overwrite a file that has the DOS Read-Only
  58.   attribute, Paradox returns you to the Installation dialog
  59.   box without completing the installation. You must remove
  60.   the Read-Only attribute before attempting to install
  61.   again.

  64. 2. DOCUMENTATION ERRORS
  65. -----------------------
  66. - The Paradox for Windows printed documentation does not
  67.   reflect new features and changes in Paradox. See the
  68.   UPGRADE.TXT and NEWPAL.DB files for details on new or
  69.   enhanced features.

  71. "Getting Started"
  72. -----------------
  73. - You must run DOS SHARE if you want to use multiple
  74.   instances of Paradox or ODAPI clients (such as the
  75.   Workgroup Desktop or the Database Desktop included with
  76.   Quattro Pro for Windows.) If you do not run SHARE in this
  77.   situation, the second instance will not load.
  78.  
  79.   The SHARE.EXE command (in either your AUTOEXEC.BAT or
  80.   your CONFIG.SYS) should include these optional
  81.   parameters:
  82.  
  83.   SHARE /F:4096 /L:40
  84.  
  85.   The /F parameter allocates file space for the DOS storage
  86.   area used to record file-sharing information. The default
  87.   value is 2048. The /L parameter sets the number of files
  88.   that can be locked at one time. The default value is 20.

  90. "User's Guide"
  91. --------------
  92. - The field _Invariant Field ID in the STRUCT.DB table is
  93.   used internally by Paradox to identify fields for use in
  94.   associated design documents.
  95.  
  96. - When you export data to or import data from an ASCII
  97.   file, your date, numeric, and currency fields use the
  98.   settings from your Windows Control Panel.
  99.  
  100. - If a Windows file association already exists for a .DBF
  101.   or .QBE file, Paradox will overwrite it during
  102.   installation.
  103.  
  104. - Under certain conditions in a multiuser environment,
  105.   forms bound to unkeyed (unindexed) tables may lose track
  106.   of the current record during a lengthy operation. You can
  107.   avoid this situation entirely by using keyed tables.
  108.  
  109. - Page 57: The paragraph describing the write lock states
  110.   "Other users can place a read lock on a table that you
  111.   have a write lock on." It should state "Other users can
  112.   place an open lock on a table that you have a write lock
  113.   on."
  114.  
  115. - When designing a graph in the Report Design window, the
  116.   Data Type option is not available from the Define Graph
  117.   dialog box.

  119. "ObjectPAL Reference"

  122. - AnyType:unAssign() does not return a value. The correct
  123.   syntax is unAssign().

  126. 3. DELETING OPTIONAL SOFTWARE

  129. After installing and becoming familiar with Paradox, you
  130. might decide to delete some of the optional software
  131. components (such as sample files). The following table shows
  132. what files you can delete and where they are located. This
  133. table assumes you accepted the default locations when you
  134. installed Paradox.

  172. 4. TUTILITY NOTES
  173. -----------------
  174.  
  175. TUTILITY checks a Paradox table for damage and rebuilds it
  176. if necessary. Paradox tables can be damaged by power
  177. failures, hardware failures, bad network cards or
  178. connections, removing a floppy disk that Paradox is
  179. accessing, or rebooting the system while Paradox is active
  180. in memory. You should always make regular backups of your
  181. important data.

  183. To start TUTILITY, type TUTILITY at the DOS prompt, then
  184. press [Enter]. If you installed Paradox in the PDOXWIN
  185. directory, you can also start TUTILITY from its icon in the
  186. Paradox for Windows group. If you installed to a different
  187. directory, you have to edit TUTILITY.PIF before you can
  188. start TUTILITY from its icon.

  192. available when you run the program. Command-line help is
  193. available by typing TUTILITY -help.
